How do I enter a custom industry?

Seraf allows you to create your own custom industry category or select a pre-defined industry category from the drop-down list provided for each company and fund in which you invest. Each custom industry field created, will become part of your drop-down list of industries going forward.

To add an industry for a company:

  • Go to Portfolio Management and select the tab for Companies.
  • Create a new company by selecting the button for “Add Company” or edit an existing company record by selecting the pencil icon in the appropriate row.
  • In the Industry field, select the arrow to activate the drop-down list of industries.
  • Select an industry from the list provided or simply type in a custom entry.
  • Save your record by scrolling to the end of the company page and selecting “Save”.

Note that if you use the import template for entering a company, you can enter a custom industry simply by typing it into the Industry field.

To add an industry for a fund:

  • Go to Portfolio Management and select the tab for Funds.
  • Create a new fund by selecting the button for “Add Fund” or edit an existing fund record by selecting the pencil icon in the appropriate row.
  • In the Industry field, select the arrow to activate the drop-down list of industries.
  • Select an industry from the list provided or simply type in a custom entry.
  • Save your record by scrolling to the end of the fund page and selecting “Save”.

Note that the list of Industries is specific to companies and to investment funds, so a new industry field added to a company record will not appear in the list of investment fund industries. However, if the same industry field is added to both companies and funds, then that industry field will represent both companies and investment funds in charts, graphs and tables that show a breakdown by industry.

When you enter a custom industry, it will appear as part of the portfolio diversification charts in the Portfolio Analysis section of your Seraf account. Enterprise account holders can also use the Custom Analysis tab in Portfolio Analysis to filter under Entity Characteristics for industry across both companies and funds, as long as the industry is identical for both.
